Pulmonary Fibrosis ‘Meet The Experts’ off to a flying start in Leeds

The first of three ‘Meet The Experts’ events for IPF patients and carers, jointly organised by Action for Pulmonary Fibrosis and the BLF, got off to a flying start in Leeds this week (Monday, November 10th) when more than 75 people attended.

The day provided a mix of information and education with plenty of opportunity for patients and carers to discuss issues and share experiences. Attendees particularly valued sessions where they were the experts and the professional experts listened.

Dr Beirne’s speech caused a stir in the audience when he spoke about the brighter future he sees for IPF patients:

“ The condition has been transformed in the past three to four years,” he said. “ The mood amongst doctors has been fairly gloomy but there has been an explosion of research into the condition across the world in recent years. We are making great progress after years of stagnation.”

At the end of the day, patients were asked to spend 10 minutes discussing the following question: “If there was one thing you would change about your treatment, what would it be?” The almost overwhelming response from all was a need for improved knowledge among medical staff at primary care level and earlier diagnosis.
